Odisha hockey star Lakra picked for Commonwealth Games

Birendra Lakra (71 caps) will be the lone Odisha player to represent India men’s hockey team in the Commonwealth Games to be held at Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3, 2014. Midfielder Sardar Singh (186 caps) will be the captain of the team while goalkeeper P R Sreejesh (100 caps) will be the vice-captain.

The 16-member Indian team was selected by Hockey India selectors BP Govinda, Harbinder Singh, Dr R P Singh and Arjun Halappa alongwith Director High Performance Roelant Oltmans and chief coach Terry Walsh on the basis of their performance during the selection trials conducted at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on 30 June and 1 July 2014.

India will play their first match against Wales on July 25. They will subsequently meet Scotland on July 26, Australia on July 29 and South Africa on July 31. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Indian men hockey team had won the silver medal.
